The PC & Games

| October 5, 2007 | 6 Comments

Before the event of this current generation of happy, shiny HD consoles and their 60fps DD5.1 gaming goodness I used to play quite a lot of PC games.  I had a regular supply of relatively inexpensive, high end PC equipment and could usually play everything with the detail turned up to eleven.

These days, things are different.  I have had the same PC for the last two years, and only have two games on the system.  The Sims 2 and all its assorted expansions (yes I know, as a “proper” and possibly “hardcore” gamer I shouldn’t, but they’re still great fun), and Steam.

It reminded me last night as I pre-ordered and pre-loaded The Orange Box (Half-Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2, Team Fortress 2 and Portal) that the last PC game I played was…Episode 1.  Before that, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast.  Even before that?  Yes, you guessed it: Half-Life 2.

I’m sure there have been plenty of decent and worthy games for the PC other than Half-Life in the last couple of years, but I spend so much time in front of a PC/Mac/laptop during the day I would rather spend my gaming time on a comfortable sofa in front of a large screen, rather than battling with a keyboard and mouse.  Buying a new graphics card to keep up with the Jones’ every six months that costs the same as a PlayStation 3 doesn’t particularly appeal to me either.

Having said that, the PC price point is far more appealing.  I was in Tesco last night and the PC version of Bioshock was £24.97 as opposed to the £40 Xbox 360 edition.  Enemy Territory: Quake Wars was the same price, and if Unreal Tournament III is going for the same amount then I’ll snap it up.  Sadly, Shadowrun and Halo 2 for Vista at the same price don’t seem to be such good value.

This weekend I’m aiming to get the Halo 3 single player campaign done and dusted so I can finally see how it ends.  For some reason though, the prospect seems more like a chore than a pleasure.  There’s something wrong there.

Interesting point about Halo 3 Pete. I’m actually trying to go back now and beat the whole thing on Legendary difficulty and jeebus it feels like one huge chore.

But having said that, I really liked Campaign on Heroic. It was good fun. For some reason I didn’t like it as much as previous Halo’s…I guess because I expected the campaign to be fought more on the streets of London, and NYC or something but ah well.

Multiplayer more than makes up for any flaws in campaign.

That is exactly what a few people have said, you are on Earth but it doesn’t feel like Earth.

Having finished Resistance on the PS3 in the last few months I felt that part was lacking somewhat. I still haven’t switched the 360 on get my Halo 3 “on” this weekend. Too busy with server builds right, dag nabbit!

If it makes you feel better, I was getting so creamed in Multiplayer I just turned off the system and went for a half hour run. ha ha

Can’t wait for HL2:Ep2. Also, think I’ll be buying UT3 on PC now, definately if the PS3 version is delayed.

Yet another high profile title delayed on the PS3!

This installment of Halo seams to be the best yet in many respects, but felt a little lacking in other ways.

I’v only played through the game in Co-Op mode, haven’t beaten it in Solo mode yet.

I have played the first couple of levels Solo, and the Arbiter has a LOT to say that doesnt get said in Co-Op. I felt a bit confused at places (why am I doing this ?) . . . but that was true of the past two games for me as well.

Overall I love the game though. I need to beat it Co-Op on Legendairy with some peeps !
