The IT Crowd – Series 2 DVD

During my time off last week I checked out the series 2 DVD of The IT Crowd, Graham Linehan’s comedy has really picked up in this second run of episodes and the DVD is an absolute must for any fan.

As with the first series disc, the menus have been superbly designed. Series 1 was very much rooted in the ZX Spectrum days, with Head Over Heels and Jet Set Willy getting the IT Crowd treatment. For series 2 it’s into the 16-bit era with some superbly implemented screens.

Episode Select

The main menu screen is based around the intro to Zero Wing, the game that brought us the now infamous “All Your Base Are Belong To Us”. This is my favourite of the bunch, here are a few more screens.

Lemmings features on the Extras select screen (including a great animation of Moss parachuting to the ground holding his specially constructed bra) and Mortal Kombat is the Episode Select screen. Great stuff.

As well as all six episodes from the series you get the obligatory commentary from Graham Linehan. These are always witty and engaging, although having someone else like producer Ash Atalla along to bounce things off would help things along a bit. There’s also a few out-takes and a mini-documentary “Recording the IT Crowd” from the recording of Moss and the German.

The first series of The IT Crowd was a bit patchy and hit and miss at times. Some of the storylines were a little weak, and Katherine Parkinson’s voice really grated after a couple of episodes. But the IT in-jokes were great, Chris Morris was legendary (naturally) and you could see that the characters were starting to develop well by the end. In the second series things have really taken off, Morris is gone and a lot of the IT stuff is very much pushed to background. But what you get are six episodes of extremely funny and well written comedy that are (IMHO) up to the standard of some of the finest Father Ted setups. The final episode is a little weak, but each episode stands up to repeated viewing and if I can get Sally quoting lines from it when we’re out (she’s one of us now) they must be doing something right.  The annoying voice has been toned down as well, helping both ears and speakers.

Roll on series three.
