HD-DVD On Life Support

| January 5, 2008 | 2 Comments

UPDATE: It was also revealed yesterday that Warner subsiduary New Line are also going exclusively Blu-ray.  There is no word on the other sub-Warner brands but I can’t exactly see them swimming against the tide on this one.  Ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for HD DVD!

Original Article
The rumours were true. Yesterday Warner Brothers announced that they are dropping support for the HD DVD format and moving exclusively to Blu-ray. This now means that Universal and Paramount are the only two studios exclusively supporting the format.

According to the always excellent coverage over at HD Digest, Warner releases will continue to release HD DVD movies until May this year, but they will be coming some time after the regular DVD and Blu-ray editions.
Word is that the BDA didn’t offer any financial incentive to Warner Brothers to make the switch, but who knows what goes on behind closed doors? The march towards making Blu-ray the solitary HD disc format just took a very large leap closer.
